AUSNUT 2023 is a collection of detailed data about the Australian food supply. It supports the 2023 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Study. It contains data to help the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) turn information people reported about foods and dietary supplements into intakes. It also contains information to help interpret the data and compare it with previous surveys.
The AUSNUT 2023 food nutrient data file contains 58 nutrient values for 3,741 foods which reflect the food supply and preparation practices during the study.
Foods
The term ‘food’ refers to all foods, beverages and ingredients in AUSNUT 2023 and reflects the:
- most commonly eaten foods in the study
- foods that have the greatest impact on food and nutrient intakes
- foods that differ in nutrient profiles
- study’s reporting requirements.
For more information see AUSNUT 2023 – Food details (Excel, 1.5MB).
Nutrients
The term ‘nutrient’ refers to traditional nutrients like vitamins and minerals, and other components of interest, like energy and caffeine. The 58 nutrients in AUSNUT 2023 were chosen based on the study’s reporting requirements.
For more information about the nutrients reported including the units, derivation, assumptions and limitations see AUSNUT 2023 – List of nutrients (Excel, 73KB).
For the full list of foods with their associated nutrient content see AUSNUT 2023 – Food nutrient profiles (Excel, 1.4MB).
Sources of nutrient data
AUSNUT 2023 incorporates nutrient composition data from a range of sources including laboratory analysis, product labels, recipe calculations and international datasets.
To help identify where the nutrient data comes from, each food is assigned a derivation. Further information on the origin of the nutrient data, such as the year samples were analysed, or the country from which data was borrowed, can be found in the sampling details. The derivation and sampling details are provided in AUSNUT 2023 – Food details (Excel, 1.5MB).
