On 13 August 2025, changes to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) were gazetted to mandate energy labelling on packaged alcoholic beverages. From the date of gazettal, businesses have 3 years to comply with the new requirements. Find out more here: Proposal P1059 - Energy labelling on alcoholic beverages.
To help food businesses respond to this new requirement, FSANZ has developed the Average energy content calculator for alcoholic beverages.
This calculator can help manufacturers:
- work out the average energy content for packaged alcoholic beverages
- prepare an energy statement.

Calculating average energy content for alcoholic beverages
You can calculate the average energy content of your products in 5 simple steps. To get started, you'll need the following information for each product.
- Average alcohol content in grams (g) per 100 g or as per cent alcohol by volume (%ABV).
- Specific gravity: converts between weight (grams (g)) and volume (millilitres (mL)). In the calculator, it is applied to express alcohol content as grams per 100 g, and to convert energy values expressed per 100 g to a per 100 mL basis. - Serving size in millilitres (mL)
- Number of standard drinks per package
- Number of servings per package.
- Average quantity of the following components (if applicable) in grams (g) per 100 g:
