Systematic review of the evidence for the relationship between arabinoxylan or arabinoxylan-rich fibre and peak postprandial blood glucose rise
Systematic review of the evidence for the relationship between arabinoxylan or arabinoxylan-rich fibre and peak postprandial blood glucose rise (July 2017) In 2012, FSANZ considered 241 European Union (EU)-authorised health claims for inclusion as food-health relationships in Standard 1.2.7 - Nutrition, Health and Related Claims. In total, 183 food-health relationships from the EU were included in the Standard. We committed to consider a further 32 health claims. Technical Assessment - Carbohydrate claims about food containing alcohol
Technical Assessment - Carbohydrate claims about food containing alcohol In November 2017, the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation (the Forum) discussed sugar claims in relation to alcoholic beverages. The meeting communiqué stated that Forum ministers are aware of an increasing number of alcoholic beverages for sale in Australia and New Zealand with the claim they are '% sugar-free'. It also stated that ministers are concerned that these claims on alcoholic beverages are misleading and that alcohol is being promoted as a healthier choice for consumers when public health advice is to limit alcohol intake. Ministers asked us to review…

The annual cost of foodborne illness in Australia
The annual cost of foodborne illness in Australia In 2020, FSANZ commissioned the Australian National University (ANU) to develop a cost model and report on the annual cost of foodborne illness in Australia. The cost model was used to generate estimates of costs for the report but is also a standalone product that can be updated and used by FSANZ and other regulators. The report includes costs for foodborne gastroenteritis due to all causes and costs due to the following ten pathogens that were selected through a prioritisation process: Campylobacter Listeria monocytogenes Norovirus Non-typhoidal Salmonella Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (Salmonella Typhi) Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) Other pathogenic …

Thiamin levels in Australian breads: Results from the 2010 and 2012 national bread surveys
Thiamin levels in Australian breads: Results from the 2010 and 2012 national bread surveys (June 2016) This report presents thiamin content data from two bread analytical surveys undertaken in 2010 and 2012 under the Implementation Sub-committee for Food Regulation (ISFR) National Coordinated Survey Plan. The surveys were part of ongoing activities to monitor the impact of mandatory folic acid and iodine fortification of bread and were used by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to also determine the amount of thiamin in breads on the Australian market. The surveys sampled three types of breads commonly consumed by Australian from the capital cities of all states and territories. The samples were chemically analysed for the amounts of thiamin, folic acid and iodine they contained. The chemical analysis was undertaken by the National…

Transgenic food animals
Transgenic food animals A Survey of publicly available information (December 2003) By Gregory S. Harper* , Alan Brownlee, Thomas E. Hall, Robert Seymour, Russell Lyons, Patrick Ledwith CSIRO Livestock Industries, 306 Carmody Rd., St. Lucia, Qld 4067 Executive Summary The last decade of animal research has reinforced the view that some food-related qualities of animal products (e.g. eating quality and yield) are strongly influenced by the genotype of the animal. Likewise animal production performance characteristics (e.g. growth rate and disease resistance) have been improved by selective breeding. One significant advantage of transgenesis is in rapid genetic improvement of traits of interest, and a dramatic example…

Values, Governments, and Food Regulation
Values, Governments, and Food Regulation In 2006, FSANZ commissioned the University of New South Wales to prepare a discussion paper on Values, Governments, and Food Regulation. The review summarises the key points to be considered when attempting to develop an appropriate policy for government intervention in the production and sale of food. The key issues explored include:
- the role of government in liberal democracies such as Australia and New Zealand,
- issues of individual rights to liberty and autonomy, and
- the role that values can appropriately play in the development of governmental policy with…
