Amendment No. 226 Amendment No. 226 to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code was published by FSANZ on 23 February 2024 (FSC 166). Amendment No. 226 contains amendments to the following Schedules in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code:
The application and proposal under which these amendments are made is as follows:Call for comment on new source of human identical milk oligosaccharide in infant formula products
Call for comment on new source of human identical milk oligosaccharide in infant formula products 23 February 2024 Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to permit a new genetically modified source organism for the production of a human identical milk oligosaccharide to be used in infant formula products. 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL) is a non-digestible carbohydrate found naturally in human milk. It is used as a nutritive substance in infant formula products at levels consistent with those found in human milk. FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said FSANZ’s safety assessment concluded there were no public health and safety concerns associated with the application. “The applicant’s 2′-FL is chemically and structurally identical to the naturally occurring substance…

Food safety for older people
Food safety for older people As people age, their bodies go through changes that increase their risk of getting sick from food poisoning (foodborne illness). Some of these changes are:
- the immune response becomes weaker
- the stomach produces less acid, killing less bacteria
- food travels more slowly through the gut, allowing bacteria to grow
- development of underlying health issues and use of medications
- general health changes due to food choices and nutrient absorption.

2022-23 key foods analytical program
2022-23 key foods analytical program Background In 2022-23 Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) undertook an analytical program to update and expand our food composition data holdings. Twelve foods were selected for nutrient analysis for which we hold no data, or the data we do hold is out-dated and may no longer reflect the products available for consumption. The nutrients selected to be analysed differed for each food depending on what data was available, the quality of the data, and whether the nutrient was likely to be present in the food. Sampling Eight samples were purchased for each food. The foods were sampled across five states and territories (Australian Capital Territory, Queensland,…

Call for comment on a processing aid from a genetically modified source
Call for comment on a processing aid from a genetically modified source 06 March 2024 Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to vary the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) to allow a new processing aid from a genetically modified (GM) source. FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said the application seeks approval to permit the use of Triacylglycerol lipase as a processing aid in the manufacture of bakery products and other cereal-based products. “FSANZ found no potential public health and safety concerns with the use of this Triacylglycerol lipase from a GM strain of Trichoderma reesei containing a gene from Thermomyces lanuginosus,” Dr Cuthbert said. “A microbiological assessment concluded that the host organism has a long history of safe use in food and is not…
