First call for comment on permitting the use of cultured quail as a novel food ​Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is undertaking the first round of public consultation on an application to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) to permit the use of cultured quail cells as a novel food.   This is the first cell-cultured food application to be assessed in Australia and New Zealand.  The application is from Vow Group Pty Ltd who are seeking approval to allow the use of cultured quail cells originating from quail as an ingredient in food products.   This first call for submissions seeks views on FSANZ’s risk assessment which focussed on the first three stages of cell-based food production – cell line, method of production and cell harvest.   The assessment found the cultured…

GM foods: Safety of ingested recombinant DNA Concerns are sometimes expressed that the presence of recombinant DNA in GM foods may pose health risks to people consuming the food. This has been an active area of research for nearly twenty years and the overwhelming scientific consensus from those studies is that the presence of recombinant DNA in food does not pose any human health or safety concerns. Call for comment on food made from a new type of GM corn line Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to permit the sale and use of food made from a new genetically modified (GM) corn. FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said corn line DAS1131 was genetically modified to provide it with herbicide tolerance and protection from insect pests. “If approved, food made from this type of GM corn could be imported into Australia and New Zealand in the form of starch, grits, meal, flour, oil and sweetener," Dr Cuthbert said. She said safety assessments are a key part of the approval process for all GM foods. “Our safety assessment considered the specific genetic modification process, the nutrient content compared to a non-GM food of its type, and any potential allergic or toxic effects in humans,” Dr Cuthbert said. “FSANZ…
