Compendium of Microbiological Criteria for Food
Compendium of Microbiological Criteria for Food Microbiological testing can play an important role in food safety management providing the reason for testing is clear and the test applied is appropriate. Microbiological criteria support decision making about a food or process when microbiological testing is used. A microbiological criterion provides microbiological limits that are considered appropriate to a food at a specific point of the food chain and states the actions to be taken when the criterion is not met. Microbiological criteria that are applied to determine the safety of a food lot (food safety criteria) are included in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code). P1065 - Code Revision – 2025 Amendments
P1065 - Code Revision – 2025 Amendments The purpose of this proposal is to make minor amendments to the Code, including:
- correcting typographical errors, omissions, inconsistencies and formatting issues;
- updating references; and
- to change the compositional fat requirements for special medical purpose product for infants. The requirements currently stated in the Code are incorrect. They should be identical to those set by P1028 for infant formula and for follow-on formula. While the P1028 2nd CFS and Approval Report state publicly that this change had been made and why, it was not included in the P1028 drafting due to an oversight.

Review of food safety management standards
Review of food safety management standards Overall, Australia has a strong food safety management system in place which ensures a safe food supply. Despite this, foodborne illness continues to be a problem. Food Ministers identified three priority areas to further strengthen the system. One of these priorities is to reduce foodborne illness particularly related to Campylobacter and Salmonella, with a nationally consistent approach. FSANZ is reviewing chapters 3 and 4 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) to ensure a consistent and current approach to through-chain food safety management in Australia. Requirements in chapters 3 and 4 only apply in Australia. More information
