Call for comment on permitting companion dogs and cats in aircraft cabins

Published

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to allow, under controlled conditions, small companion dogs and cats in aircraft cabins, including as food is served on flights.

The application, submitted by Virgin Australia Pty Ltd, seeks approval for airline businesses operating in Australia to continue serving food to customers as part of in-flight service when companion animals are onboard.

The proposed amendment to the Code would allow airline passengers to travel with companion dogs and cats in the aircraft cabin, provided the animals are kept in pet containers and meet airline requirements.

FSANZ’s safety assessment found the risk of foodborne transmission of pathogens from companion animals in this setting is low when risk management controls are in place.

FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said passenger safety was the priority in assessing this unique application.

“Our assessment identified appropriate food safety controls to manage food safety risks if airlines choose to allow companion animals in cabins,” Dr Cuthbert said.

“This proposed change would provide choice for travellers who have a small companion animal while maintaining in-flight food safety standards.”
