Development of dietary supplement nutrient data
Development of dietary supplement nutrient data Preparation of TGA data Development of nutrient profiles for dietary supplements consumed in the AHS FSANZ used a recipe approach for developing nutrient profiles for dietary supplements consumed during the 2011-13 Australian Health Survey (AHS). To undertake recipe calculations for dietary supplements FSANZ needs information on the:
- ingredients and their proportions
- nutrient content of each of the ingredients
- dosage type and amount.

Assigning foods and portions reported to AUSNUT 2011-13 data
Assigning foods and portions reported to AUSNUT 2011-13 data Each food consumed in the 2011-13 Australian Health Survey (AHS), is coded to a nutrient profile, which has a 5-digit food classifcation code associated with it and one or more measures to enable the gram amount of food consumed to be calculated. General process for assigning food and portion information FSANZ worked with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to ensure each food and portion reported was coded to an appropriate food descriptor with an associated nutrient profile and measure descriptor in AUSNUT 2011-13. Foods and portions were coded using the key steps outlined below. FSANZ food and measure descriptors provided to the ABS…

Proposal P265 - Development of a Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood
Proposal P265 - Development of a Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood At the time of the development of Standard 4.2.1 Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood in Chapter 4 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code there was uncertainty regarding the presence of algal toxin in pearl oyster meat and therefore in the ranking of the risks associated with this product. Research published in 2009 indicates that there is no accumulation of biotoxins in the pearl oyster adductor muscles. The research is described in Murray SA et al., (2009) Differential accumulation of paralytic shellfish toxins from Alexandrium minutum in the pearl oyster, Pinctada imbricata, Toxicon 54 (3): 217-223. The research contributes to the original premise that it is not necessary to include pearl oyster…

FSANZ risk assessment on antibiotic use in New Zealand apples
FSANZ risk assessment on antibiotic use in New Zealand apples (13 May 2011) FSANZ has completed a risk assessment on the use of antimicrobials in some New Zealand apple orchards in response to concerns about possible health and safety risks. The antimicrobial, streptomycin is used in a small proportion of New Zealand apple orchards (about five per cent) to control the plant disease fire blight. Following its risk assessment FSANZ has concluded there is a negligible food safety concern. This view has been confirmed by internationally recognised experts in the field of antimicrobial resistance, who have peer-reviewed the FSANZ assessment. Key points from the risk assessment:
- Only a small proportion of apple orchards in New Zealand are treated with streptomycin during each growing season (less than five per cent in 2009-10).…

Raw chicken meat microbiological survey (2011)
Raw chicken meat microbiological survey (2011) (Last updated November 2011) FSANZ conducted a survey in 2008 to see whether live and slaughtered chickens are contaminated with harmful bacteria. The survey was used to guide development of the Primary Production and Processing (PPP) Standard for Poultry Meat, which takes effect in May 2012. The standard requires poultry farmers and processors to ensure their practices and procedures are effective at lowering the likelihood of poultry being contaminated with Salmonella and Campylobacter. Salmonella and Campylobacter are the two main bacteria that can be present on raw chicken but they are killed by cooking. Tests for Salmonella and Campylobacter were taken at three points along the chicken meat supply chain: on-farm…
